1. What is neurofeedback? Neuro-feedback is getting feedback about the neural status of a person. Modern technology help us to see our internal neural status shown live in front, on a computer screen, in both digital and analogous term. Digital means that we can see the neural status in terms of numerical values of our different brain wave amplitudes. We produce electrical waves of different frequencies which are responsible for our different mental states. Analogous means interpreting these digital values in terms of changing length of a line or bar or fading or moving objects on a screen or getting sounds on or off depending on these numerical values. We can thus see the internal mechanisms in our brain live and all areas of brain can thus be quantitatively measured through this method called q-EEG (Quantitative Electro Encephalo Graphy). This brain mapping helps us to predict various psychological states of a person very accurately. Thus neurofeedback makes us CONSCIOUS of our SUBCONSCIOUS or UNCONSCIOUS state.

2. What is biofeedback? Biofeedback is getting feedback about the biological or physiological status of our body. This include status of our heart function, our breathing, our muscular tension and balance, our stress responses in terms of sweating, skin temperature etc. We get feedback of these values in both digital and analogous terms and get CONSCIOUS of these SUBCONSCIOUS or UNCONSCIOUS processes of our body. 3. Since how long these therapies are being done? These therapies are being done from almost 30 years in USA and other western countries. Now there are many advances both in theoretical and technical aspect of these therapy and we can record and monitor very subtle changes in our neurophysiology and use them for treatment of many diseases and disorders which were considered difficult or incurable before.

4. How do they help?
Not only these therapy show us our neurobiological status, but most importantly, they help us to provide a baseline from where we can even change these biological and neurological values in the desirable direction at our will. Once we become conscious of our subconscious or even unconscious state, we have got unlimited power to even change them. Most of us don’t know or even don’t believe that this power of cure is given to all human being. This was the method used by our ancestors, our sages, when the medical science was nowhere in picture, to get rid of all physical or mental illnesses. Thus these feedback therapies don’t act on their own account. They just help us to realize our state and the therapist role is to show the direction and degree upto which one need to change his or her state to reach the state of neural or biological equilibrium. There are no absolute target for every case. The knowledge and experience of the therapist becomes important here who help us to guide our neurobiological state in the most desirable and required direction. 5. Is this effect similar to meditation? Yes, we can call these therapies a form of e-meditation. Abnormal thought pattern is the cause of most of the human sufferings. Meditation also involves controlling our mind and breathing pattern. But, we cannot measure and monitor exactly what is happening to our neurophysiological state during meditation. We may sometime even get in more stress while trying to control our mind and breathing during meditation. Without technological help, we cannot know what is our base line status, what is our progress and in what direction we are heading in each meditation session. Measuring and monitoring even small changes in our mental and physiological state, with the help of this therapy, helps us greatly in achieving our ultimate aim which is to control our mind and rectify our disordered body mechanisms. 6. Is this effect permanent? Yes, the effect of these therapies is like changing our habitual thought pattern by forming newer neural connections. As we learn walking, driving or any other skill, we never forget them. This is because our brain forms permanent neural connections to execute these functions. Similarly, once the anomalous thought process is identified and rectified with this therapy, it becomes part of our neural mechanism throughout our life. Moreover, we begin to get more success or rewards as a result of our new thought pattern and behaviour. This further strengthens the neural network in our brain. This conditioning of our brain is called operant conditioning. Hence the amount of neural energy spent to complete a task becomes progressively small as we go on strengthening our neural network. 7. Do they change our brain or body mechanisms & structure? Yes, it is scientifically proven that by doing neurofeedback therapy, one can change the structure and hence functions of the brain. There is a change in the density of neural network, regional blood flow, neuronal cell numbers , neurotransmitters amount and its receptor status. This change is collectively called as neuronal plasticity. Our neural status changes as we utilize them to face and solve different life situations.

8. What are their uses or indications?
Most commonly used treatment in cases of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Syndrome.). It is very commonly being used in cases of anxiety, poor motivation, lack of concentration, poor memory, stress, tension headache, migraine, abnormal behaviour. It is also being used with other forms of therapy in cases of autism, learning disorders, depression, traumatic emotional stress etc. Along with biofeedback, we can cure hypertension and diabetes by reducing stress level significantly. Thus the doses of antihypertensive medicines or insulins can be reduced with the help of this therapy. 9. What is the appropriate age group for this therapy? Anybody who can sit still for about 30-40 minutes can take this therapy. One just need to understand the command that the therapist keep on giving to the client during the session. After few sessions, the client become aware and experienced enough to achieve the best result and target given by the therapist. Thus this therapy can be given in children as young as 4 years. There is no upper age limit. 10. Can they be harmful? As such these therapies are not harmful per se. But if there are changes in brain and biological functions which are not recognised or identified during or between the sessions, they can cause abnormal behaviour or sleep pattern in the client. Hence during the therapy, the therapist are constantly looking for brain wave changes at other locations which might have gone out of range. Early identification and rectification of these values prevent any long term abnormal changes in functions. 11. Can they help in diagnosis? How accurate they are? The qEEG and biofeedback analysis helps us to accurately predict various psychophysiological state of a person. We don’t ask our client what is their problems, we tell them what their problems are? This accurate prediction gives our client great faith in this technology and our treatment methods. Our accuracy of prediction in diagnosing the neurophysiological state is more than 90%. 12. Why they are not so popular as yet? In western countries, this therapy is very popular and getting more popular now. In India, it is sorry to know that many medical professionals are unaware of this therapy. It is our duty and responsibility to make all of you aware of this unique treatment method which can help the masses change the cause of human suffering which is our abnormal thought. Thought leads to words, words lead to action, action leads to habit, habit leads to character and character leads to our destiny. With all other therapy, we are only treating the effect, with this therapy, we are treating the cause. So, let us treat the cause and not the effect. 13. How is this therapy done? As the client come, we ask about the changes in thought, sleep or any other emotions. We record them, compare them and decide the neurophysiological values which need to be change. We apply electrode on scalp at the desired locations in neurofeedback or apply different sensors to measures various biological response of heart, lung, peripheral blood flow, muscular tension, sweating response and temperature. During the session the client is constantly encouraged to change his or her neurophysiological state in the desired direction. They are given rewards in the form of digital score, audio feedback in the form of music on achieving a target or video animations which are moving on the screen during the period in which the client remains in the range. 14. What is the frequency of sessions and how long do they last? These sessions are given for 30 to 45 minutes with 2-5 minutes breaks during the sessions. We give2-3 such sessions per week and about 2-4 months are required in most cases to achieve permanent change in brain function. 15. What is the cost factor and cost benefit ratio? If we consider the total cost of this therapy, the figure may seem too high and unaffordable, but given the benefit that we get, that too for the whole life and considering the cost of medicine saved and human productivity improved, the cost is negligible. This is important to understand. The cost of treatment at our centers varies according to the presence and severity of diseases. It may be between INR 12000 to INR 80000. 16. Is there need of medicines along with these therapy? No, as such we don’t prescribe any medicine except some food additives in the form of vitamins and other supplements. Those already taking medicines need to reduce the dose as the beneficial effect of this therapy begins to be seen in them. At that point of time, the psychoactive drugs may cause side effects if their doses are not reduced. 17. Does medicine affect these therapies? Yes, those taking medicines for their mental problems hinder us in interpreting the qEEG. But then we consider the implications of these drugs during this therapy and make appropriate adjustment in interpreting the results. 18. What is the success rate of these therapies? What is the chance of recurrence? Best success rate is achieved in cases of anxiety & stress, emotional trauma, migraine, mild to moderate cases of ADHD etc. We are also treating cases of high blood pressure, poor memory, sleep disorders etc with high rate of success. The rate of recurrence is low, but it may be high where the patient is forced to live in severely disordered home and social environment. |
